The history of Moroccan women is marked by resilience, strength, and significant contributions to their society. From ancient times to the present, they have played crucial roles in education, resistance movements, and cultural preservation.
In the medieval period, Fatima al-Fihriya founded the University of Al Quaraouiyine in 859 AD in Fez. This institution is recognized as the world's oldest existing, continually operating higher educational establishment, highlighting the impact of women in Moroccan education and culture.
During the colonial period, women like Malika al-Fassi were at the forefront of resistance movements. Al-Fassi was the only female signatory of the Moroccan Independence Manifesto in 1944, underscoring the important role women played in the fight for independence.
In modern times, the reformation of the Mudawana, or Family Code, in 2004 marked a significant step for women's rights in Morocco. This legislation improved women's legal status in marriage, divorce, and child custody, reflecting ongoing efforts toward gender equality.
